The message of Lakewood Church preacher Joel Osteen changed the life of Rene Tijerina.
His father Ray tells 39 News he helped spread the word throughout his northwest side neighborhood. "He converted into that religion and his faith was so strong that he was having bible classes at his house. He converted people into having more faith in God lets put it that way."
Tijerina died trying to help his son who was in a minor accident early Sunday morning near the Galleria. He tried to cross a freeway barricade on the 610 loop, and fell through a gap more than 20 feet to a sidewalk below.
After hurricane Ike he's said to have given a perfect stranger 100 dollars worth of groceries.
Some of his giving was not known until burial plans were being made.
"They (the undertaker) said he has 6 plots but one of the plots is taken. I said well how can that be? No one in our family has passed away. It turns out it was a homeless man that Rene helped by inviting him to his house. Rene allowed him to spend the last few months of his life in his house. When he passed away Rene gave him one of his prepaid plots said Roger Tijerina. "
"Rene changed his life and he wanted to see everyone else change their lives for the better," said Roger.
Rene Tijerina was 33. He leaves behind a 13 year old daughter and a 16 year old son.
