Man guilty of bank robbery
A Howard County man pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Baltimore yesterday to robbing a bank in Elkridge in November and escaping with more than $8,500, according to the Maryland U.S. attorney's office.
John Jakes, 55, of Elkridge could receive up to 25 years in federal prison when he is sentenced July 18.
Prosecutors said Jakes walked into PNC Bank in the 6200 block of Washington Blvd. wearing a hooded jacket, a baseball cap, a black curly-haired wig, a black backpack and dark gloves. According to his plea agreement, Jakes put his hands on the back of the neck of an employee, pushed her to the teller station and demanded money.
After getting the cash, prosecutors said, he pushed the employee to another teller and repeated the demand.
Police arrested Jakes a short time later after chasing his Ford pickup through Howard County at speeds exceeding 80 mph, prosecutors said.
