The County Council has a schedule of public hearings and work sessions on the capital and operating budgets that is to culminate in a vote May 22.

The first rounds are Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening, when the council will hold public hearings in the Council chambers at the George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City.

The Tuesday hearing begins at 4 p.m. and is to break for an hour at 6 p.m. It is to cover capital and operating budgets for Howard Community College, the library system and county schools. The Wednesday hearing begins at 7 p.m. and covers the rest of the county budget.

The only other hearing where public testimony can be given is at 11 a.m. May 13.

Work sessions -- open to the public, but no testimony allowed -- are scheduled May 6 through 13, with additional sessions May 14, 16 and 20 if needed. These sessions are during the day.

To sign up for the public hearings, go to the county's Web site, www.co.ho.md.us, click on County Council, then click on Testify. You also can call 410-313-3000.
