Summer camp to focus on jazz
The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, in partnership with Contemporary Arts Inc., a nonprofit organization working to advance jazz in the community, will offer a Music and Arts Academy Summer Camp where campers of all skill levels can study instruments, singing and dance.

Jazz saxophonist Carl Grubbs will direct the camp. Instruction will be available on saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, guitar, drums and keyboards, and in African, modern and tap dance, as well as jazz singing. Campers can bring their own instruments or use instruments provided by the camp.

Payment plans are available for all applicants; scholarships and financial assistance are available for those who qualify.

The two-week camp for children ages 7-16, will be held from 8:45 .am. to 3 p.m. weekdays, beginning July 7, at Hammond High School in Columbia.

Tuition is $420. The early-registration deadline is May 16; registration must be completed by July 3. Those who register early will have a greater choice of instruments.

Musical theater program offered
The Slayton House Camp of the Arts is accepting registration for its musical theater program. Children who have completed full-day kindergarten and those in grades one through eight are invited to apply. Some scholarships are available.

Camps will be held June 16-July 3; July 7-25 and July 28-Aug. 8.

The Conservatory Camp for students in grades eight through 12 will be held June 23-July 11 and July 14-Aug. 1. The first session will perform Oklahoma! The second session will perform Into the Woods. Tony McGuffin will direct the camp. Admission is by audition only.

Auditions will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 15 at Slayton House. Information: Kathy Verheul, 410-730-3987.

Coloring, poster contests planned
Entries must be submitted by Thursday for the Howard Soil Conservation District's coloring contest for children in kindergarten through third grade and its poster contest for those in grades four through 12.

Entries from around the county will be judged at the Howard Soil Conservation District board meeting in late May, and prizes will be awarded. The winners will be notified in June, and the work of first-place winners will be submitted to a state contest.

Events to mark Children's Book Week
In observance of Children's Book Week, children are invited to share their ideas for the Howard County library and have a picture taken with reading mascot Sneaks the Cat May 12-21 at library branches.

Sessions are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. May 12 at the Glenwood branch; 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. May 13 at the Savage branch; 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. May 13 at the Elkridge branch; 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. May 19 at the Miller branch; 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. May 20 at the central library; and 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. May 21 at the east Columbia branch.
