In an effort to entice visitors and University System of Maryland at Hagerstown students to park in the North Potomac Street Parking Deck, the facility will be renamed the University District Parking Deck, the Hagerstown City Council decided on Tuesday.
The renaming request came from USMH officials who expressed concern that the deck is not being used by drivers unfamiliar with the city or the campus since the two do not face each other, city Public Works Director Eric Deike said.
USMH is on West Washington Street, and the parking deck around the corner fronts on North Potomac Street.
In addition to the name the council informally agreed upon, the three other suggestions were University System of Maryland at Hagerstown Parking Deck, University System of Maryland Parking Deck and University Parking Deck, according to a May 16 memorandum from Deike to City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman.
Councilman Martin E. Brubaker expressed concern that city visitors would be deterred from using the deck by assuming it was reserved for university students and staff.
Councilman Lewis C. Metzner said new signs would make it clear the deck is public parking.
“We want people to associate downtown with the university, with the school for the arts, with arts and education, and I think renaming this deck to reflect that there is a university in downtown Hagerstown could be very positive,” Metzner said.
Zimmerman pointed out that the new name would fall in line with the parking deck in the city’s Arts and Entertainment District, which is named the “A & E District Parking Deck.”
Brubaker agreed that the word “district” implies a “larger arena.”
