3 youths charged with arson
The state fire marshal's office has charged three juveniles with arson, malicious burning and conspiracy in connection with the destruction of a bus shelter at Route 924 and Holly Wreath Court in Abingdon earlier this year.
The three boys from the Abingdon area - two 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old - were arrested Friday and released to the custody of their parents by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. If found guilty, the teenagers would likely be ordered to pay restitution and perform community service, but they could be detained in a juvenile facility, officials said.
The Feb. 3 fire, one of several deliberately set in the Bel Air area this year, caused about $5,000 in damage to the shelter used by area residents and students waiting for bus transportation. During February and March, investigators dealt with several firebombs and arsons and are continuing to look into those incidents.
"Fire marshals are continuing investigations into all the incidents, but do not anticipate any other arrests," said Joseph Zurolo, deputy fire marshal.
The Harford County Sheriff's Office Resource Officer, assigned to Patterson Mill High School, provided investigators with details obtained from students that led to the arrests and are continuing the investigation, officials said.
