2 killed in shootings; man charged in fatal stabbing

Chicago police on Saturday were investigating the deaths of two teenagers in separate gang-related shootings.

The first shooting happened about 8:30 a.m. Friday on the Southwest Side when Rogelio Calderon, 17, was shot after confronting a group of three gang members, police said. Calderon was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:12 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The shooting happened in the 4200 block of South Artesian Avenue.The second shooting took place Thursday evening on the Southeast Side. Police found a man shot in a vehicle in the 9300 block of South Chappel Avenue. Jeffery Hughes, 19, of the 6300 block of South Elizabeth Street, was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m. Friday, according to the medical examiner's office.

Meanwhile, a Chicago man was charged Saturday in the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend. John Small, 54, had been released from prison last year and was on parole for a 1996 aggravated arson conviction, police said.

Small, 54, of the 6100 block of South Whipple Street, was charged with first-degree murder in the killing of his girlfriend in her South Side apartment, officials said.

Denise Lawrence, 47, was stabbed about 9:30 p.m. Thursday in her fourth-floor unit in the 5000 block of South Indiana Avenue. Her body was found by a friend after Small allegedly answered the door, police said.

Police said Small's image was captured on video surveillance leaving the building. Small has several other convictions, including robbery and felon possession of a firearm, police said.
