Fort George G. Meade is a U.S. military base located in Maryland's Anne Arundel County. The fort was originally Camp Meade, an Army training post created in 1917 and named after the Civil War-era Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade. The location for the fort was picked because of its close proximity to a railroad, Baltimore's port and Washington, D.C. The location for the fort was picked because of its close proximity to a railroad, Baltimore's port and Washington, D.C. In addition to functioning as a training ground during World War I, the camp housed some of the first women to serve in the Army. During World War II , the base served as a major training center and POW camp for German and Italian soldiers. Today, the base focuses on national security and intelligence. The combination of Fort Meade and the National Security Agency, which has its headquarters at Fort Meade, makes the two entities the largest employers in Maryland. Fort Meade employs about 39,000 military and civilian workers and contractors. It currently has the fourth-largest workforce of any Army installation in the U.S., and its workforce is set to grow by at least 5,000 personnel by 2010 due to the 2005 Base and Realignment Closure (BRAC).
