A man was shot and wounded yesterday morning as he was changing a car tire near an apartment complex on a quiet, dead-end street near Carney, Baltimore County police said.
The shooting was reported shortly before 6 a.m. on Shawnee Court. Police investigators determined that a 27-year-old man was changing a tire when someone walked up to him and attempted to fire a handgun, but the weapon malfunctioned, a county police spokesman said.
As the man changing the tire tried to flee, the assailant was able to fire the gun and a bullet struck the victim in the back, according to police spokesman Cpl. Michael Hill. The shooter fled on foot, he said.
The victim was taken by state police helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Hill said. He was taken into surgery and was listed in serious but stable condition, he said. Police did not release the victim's name.
Hill said the shooting near the apartment complex was "out of the blue" for the neighborhood. He said investigators believe that the incident "was not a random act."
He urged anyone with information about the shooting to call county police at 410-307-2020.
