Man sentenced for carjacking
A 24-year-old man accused of shooting an off-duty Baltimore police officer two years ago was sentenced yesterday to 30 years in prison on federal carjacking and gun charges, according to the Maryland U.S. attorney's office.
Collin Hawkins of the 6000 block of Moravia Park Drive still faces attempted murder and first-degree assault charges in Baltimore Circuit Court in the Dec. 5 shooting of Officer Momodu Gondo. City prosecutors said that trial is scheduled to begin today. Gondo was attacked just after midnight Dec. 5, 2006, as he got out of his car at his home in the 5700 block of The Alameda.
Authorities said the federal case stemmed from the shooting of the officer and another case in which Hawkins was arrested Nov. 22, 2006, in connection with an armed carjacking in the city. A federal jury convicted Hawkins of carjacking, use of a handgun in a crime of violence and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
