The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, formerly known as the Baltimore Zoo, was founded in 1876 by the state government. Exhibits at the zoo include an African black-footed penguin colony, a polar bear watch and the Maryland Wilderness, which includes a children's zoo. Annual events at the zoo include breakfasts with different animals, Halloween activities (which commence with an elephant pumpkin smash), a reggae and brew festival, a marathon, an Easter Egg hunt, a beer and wine festival, sleepovers at the zoo and Zoomerang, the zoo's annual black-tie fundraiser.
