The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, formerly known as the Baltimore Zoo, was founded in 1876 by the state government. In 2004, the facility changed its name after it received an emergency aid package from the state. The third oldest zoo in the United States, the Maryland Zoo is located in Baltimore's Druid Hill Park and covers more than 160 acres. Exhibits at the zoo include an African black-footed penguin colony, a polar bear watch and the Maryland Wilderness, which includes a children's zoo. Annual events at the zoo include breakfasts with different animals, Halloween activities (which commence with an elephant pumpkin smash), a reggae and brew festival, a marathon, an Easter Egg hunt, a beer and wine festival, sleepovers at the zoo and Zoomerang, the zoo's annual black-tie fundraiser.
