Michael Vick, a Newport News native and former Pro-Bowl NFL quarterback with the Atlanta Falcons, was hit with a federal indictment on dog fighting charges in July 2007. Due to the dogfighting controversy, Vick's endorsement deals also took a hit, as his several stores pulled Vick shoes, cleats and even his famous #7 jersey from their shelves. In coordination with a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, Vick entered a guilty plea in August 2007 and was sentenced to 23 months in prison.
