Baltimore Catholics look to a new era

The Archdiocese of Baltimore, the mother ship of American Catholicism and, for more than a century, a refuge for progressive Catholic thinking, has a new archbishop - Edwin Frederick O'Brien, a man who has made no secret of his concerns about gays in the priesthood and one who has spent much of his career ministering to the tradition-oriented U.S. military services.

Keeler legacy will continue

Accepting the resignation of Cardinal William H. Keeler, Pope Benedict XVI turned over leadership of the birthplace of American Catholicism yesterday to Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien, a prelate known for ministering to U.S. troops on the battlefield and strictly supervising the education of priests.

Keeler will be hard to follow, many say

To Latino parishioners, Cardinal William H. Keeler is a leader who embraced diversity and made the effort to learn their language.

Keeler plans to remain in Baltimore

The leader of Baltimore's Catholics says he plans to stay in the city even after a successor is named by Pope Benedict XVI.In an extensive interview with The Sun in which he discussed his post-retirement plans for the first time, Cardinal William H. Keeler said that he wants to remain at the helm of the Basilica Historic Trust when the pope replaces him as archbishop of Baltimore.

Keeler's age opens issue of succession

In a matter of months, weeks or even days, a new bishop could be appointed to take charge of America's oldest Roman Catholic archdiocese.

A handbook rooted in Baltimore

All these decades later, Cardinal William H. Keeler of Baltimore can recite from the small book he memorized in an elementary classroom. So can Carol Nevin "Sue" Abromaitis, a Loyola College English professor. So can thousands upon thousands of other Americans who attended Catholic schools or religious instruction:

Bells toll to commemorate basilica's ties to France

Bells rang 200 times on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean yesterday to celebrate the centuries-old relationship between France and the Basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore.

Crash 'happened just like that'

Cardinal William H. Keeler moved with the aid of a walker yesterday, his right pants leg slit to accommodate the protective boot that braced his broken right ankle.Keeler suffered the injury about two weeks ago in a car crash while vacationing in Italy. One of his closest friends, the Rev. Bernard Quinn, was killed and another friend, Monsignor Thomas Smith, the driver, suffered several cracked ribs.
