Two Anne Arundel officers hurt
In the same week that an Anne Arundel County police officer was shot in Brooklyn, two more officers were assaulted while responding to calls, police said yesterday.
Officer Dina Johnson was forced against a kitchen counter after arresting a man who had been wielding a frying pan during a family argument just after midnight yesterday in the 8200 block of Old Mill Road in Pasadena, police said. Her right arm and shoulder were injured, and she was treated and released at Anne Arundel Medical Center, police said.
Officer Mark Zukowski received a shoulder injury about 10:50 p.m. Tuesday when he was assaulted in an eviction dispute in the 1400 block of Stoney Point Way in Curtis Bay, police said. The injury did not require medical attention, police said, but three officers had to subdue a suspect.
Nearly 100 assaults on officers were reported through May, putting the force on pace to surpass last year's 217.
"We have just seen a rise in recent weeks" in the number of assaults on police, said Sgt. John Gilmer, county police spokesman. "We found that ... individuals are making a conscious effort to resist arrest."
The shooting occurred Tuesday morning as officers on foot chased a man into Baltimore before he was captured. During the incident, Officer Lee Joines was shot twice - one bullet was stopped by his bulletproof vest, the other striking his gun.
