Medicare Part D seminars Presented by the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities, classes will be held at area senior centers. Open enrollment for Medicare Part D begins Nov. 15. Learn about your options for Medicare and Medicare's Part D prescription coverage. The seminars will be held at the following senior activity centers:

Grant application

Grant applications are being accepted by the United Way of Central Maryland Partnership of Anne Arundel County. The one-time impact grants are offered to local health and human services agencies, in the county or serving its residents.

Teaching kids how to pack healthy school lunches

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health's Learn to Live Program provides nutritional information that will help you to teach your child to make healthy lunch choices. "The Cafeteria Connection: An Inside Look at School Lunches" provides a sample menu and nutritional analysis for school lunches and breakfasts. Spanish-language line

A Spanish-speaking operator will answer calls to the Aprenda a Vivir Spanish Language Line of the Anne Arundel County Health Department at 410-222-4479, 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays. Callers can leave messages at other times. Information about community health services and free Spanish-language informational materials are available.

The free 2009-2010 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults With Disabilities and Caregivers" is available at the Heritage Office Complex, 2666 Riva Road, fourth floor, Annapolis, and the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities' seven senior activity centers, county public libraries and Giant Food stores. For additional information, call Maryland Access Point/Information and Assistance at 410-222-4257.

Healthy Eating Kit

The kit contains tips on nutrition and Hispanic recipes, and a Quit Smoking Kit, with a step-by-step guide, "Cambie un Habito," to stop smoking permanently. "Cambie un Habito" can be downloaded from the Health Department's Spanish-language Web site, aasalud.org. Click "Aprenda a Vivir" on the navigation bar, and then click on "Dejar de Fumar." A Breast and Cervical Cancer Kit, with information on prevention and treatment, is also available.

Calendar

Weight management and wellness Seminar sponsored by the University of Maryland Center will be offered at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Courtney Conference Center, lower level of the Tate Center, 305 Hospital Drive. Conducted by Dr. Mark Kligman, the seminar explores a comprehensive surgical approach to weight loss. Surgical therapy is a treatment option reserved for those ages 18 to 60 who have a body mass index (BMI) over 40 or who have a BMI between 35 and 40 and obesity-related medical complications, such as diabetes, significant cardiovascular disease or sleep apnea. Forum on county reaction to H1N1 virus

A public forum on the H1N1 virus sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Department of Health will be held 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at Anne Arundel Community College, Cade Building, Room 219. County Executive John R. Leopold will host the forum to update residents about the county's response to the virus. Department of Health and public schools officials will provide information. Lead certificate requirement

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health reminds parents that all children newly enrolled in county pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade are required to have a lead testing certificate. The certificate ensures that children living in high-risk areas are being tested for lead poisoning, which can cause young children to have difficulty learning, behavioral problems and developmental disabilities. High-risk ZIP codes in Anne Arundel are 20711, 20714, 20764, 20779, 21060, 21061, 21225, 21226, and 21402, because they have a greater proportion of older homes that may contain lead paint.

The site features hot weather tips, sun and water safety, information on Lyme disease and recommendations for reducing the risk of food-borne illnesses at picnics, barbecues and other outdoor activities.
