From USA's description of the "Second Time Around" episode of Political Animals: "With the clock ticking, Elaine sends Bud to diffuse the Iranian hostage situation. ..."
A sharper awareness of buried metaphors might help people sort out their confusion about homonyms. Free rein, letting go of control, for example, comes from horseback riding, understanding of which makes free reign nonsense. In the Political Animals episode, Elaine wants Bud to defuse the hostage situation, to render it harmless, as one defuses an explosive device. Diffuse as a verb means to make something spread out, metaphorically to disseminate or make known widely.
But wait, there's more: If you are given to xenophobic ranting, you can join your fellows who commented on yesterday's post on illegal alien, illegal immigrant, and undocumented worker.
Also over the weekend, in a follow-up to the over/more than post, I examine the Humpty-Dumptyish tendency when some bogus rule or distinction is exposed to be without foundation, to insist on it all the more.
Today is the last day of vacation; back to night content production managing at the paragraph factory tomorrow.
