At Tuesday's event in San Francisco, Apple unveiled a new iPad, dubbed iPad Air, that the company says is thinner, lighter and more powerful.
The iPad Air will start at $499 for 16 gigabytes of memory, the same price as the current-generation iPad, and ship Nov. 1, the company announced. The device weighs just 1 pound, down from 1.4 pounds. It also has the more powerful A7 processor chip, which means graphics are twice as fast, Apple said.
Also, new versions of the Retina MacBook Pro laptops and a redesigned Mac Pro were announced.
The MacBook Pro will have a less expensive price tag – a hair under $2,000 – and the Mac Pro should be in stores before Christmas rolls around.
Apple also announced the release of the update to its operating system.
Mavericks OS X, offered for free, adds new Maps and iBooks apps, enables users to tag files, and respond to messages within notifications and more.
Ahead of Apple’s announcement of the new iPad, CEO Tim Cook disclosed that the company had sold more than 170 million iPad tablets since the device first hit the market 3 1/2 years ago.
Meantime, some analysts are predicting that the popularity of tablets is on the wane. The question now is, can new iPads lead to new growth?
