(STERLING, Kan.)—Investigators believe icy roads were a factor in a crash that killed two people near Sterling Monday morning.
The crash happened on K-14 about a quarter-mile north of the city of Sterling around 7:30 Monday morning. The Rice County Sheriff's Office says 75-year-old Laverne Barnes of Sterling was driving his pick-up south on the highway, while 29-year-old Virginia Larkin was driving her car north.
Investigators say the two vehicles collided head on, killing both Barnes and Larkin. An eight-year-old passenger in the car with Larkin was injured in the wreck and taken to a Wichita hospital with a broken leg.
Rice County EMS, the Sterling Fire Department, Rice County Rescue, the Rice County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Sterling Police Department all responded to the accident.
