The top five mushers in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race have finished in Nome, with two of them beating the race’s previous record, set in 2002.
Kotzebue musher John Baker, the first Alaska Native Iditarod champion since 1976, holds the new record at 8 days, 18 hours, 46 minutes and 39 seconds. Baker, who is also the first-ever Inupiaq Iditarod champion, came into Nome at 9:46 a.m. He had to walk his dogs across the line after their zig-zagging path led to a tangle just feet from the famed burled arch.
Baker had extended his lead over runner-up Ramey Smyth, known for his fast times between the checkpoints of Safety and Nome. Smyth trailed Baker by just 50 minutes leaving White Mountain, where mushers are required to take an 8-hour layover. Smyth finished at 10:50 a.m.
The third musher into Nome was Hans Gatt, who came in at 3:24 p.m.
Dallas Seavey, this year’s Yukon Quest champion, came into Nome at 5:27 p.m.
Hugh Neff finished around 6:40 p.m. His official time was not available at the time of posting.
Rounding out the Top 10 mushers are Sebastian Schnuelle, Ray Redington, Jr., Peter Kaiser, Jessie Royer and DeeDee Jonrowe.
Three mushers scratched from the Last Great Race Tuesday. Rookie Kris Hoffman scratched in-between Grayling and Eagle Island. The Colorado musher called the race marshal using a satellite phone that trail sweeps carry and told the marshal that he was without leaders and was turning around and scratching.
Rookie Mike Santos scratched from the race in Unalakleet citing the well-being of his team. Veteran musher Robert Bundtzen, who earlier in the race was the first musher to Rohn after passing the lead pack while it was laying over, has also scratched, according to the Iditarod’s standings page. Race officials did not say why Bundtzen scratched.
The race’s top rookie as of 6:15 p.m. Tuesday was Nicolas Petit, in 27th place. Petit was out of Koyuk at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday.
