The departure ceremony held Sunday morning at the Alaska National Guard Armory on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
Soldiers of Alpha Company, 1ST Battalion, 207th Aviation Regiment will head overseas to provide aviation support to U.S. and Coalition forces in the continued war on terror.
"We are a company of Black Hawks, said Platoon Sergeant Seth Gordon. “We work on helicopters and we fly missions, mainly humanitarian missions."
Since 2003, Alpha Company has been deployed 12 times, making it the most deployed unit in the Alaska Army National Guard, completing missions in Kosovo, Iraq, Guatemala, Haiti and Honduras.
Despite a number of deployments, saying goodbye to friends and family never gets easy.
“The hardest part is leaving the family members behind,” said Captain Nathan Cornilles, Company Commander for Alpha Company. “And the state of Alaska, this is a place we’ve chosen to call home.”
Alpha Company will spend their first 3 months training at Fort Hood, Texas before spending the next 9 months stationed in Kuwait. The company is expected to return home sometime in January, 2014.
