SAN DIEGO—A San Diego man plans to walk all the way to New York City as a way to raise awareness to veteran needs.
Anthony LoBue, a Vietnam veteran, plans to walk the approximately 3600 miles over the course of a year with plans to arrive just in time for the tenth remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
"I'm a senior. I'm disabled. I'm a veteran. I just decided to become a political activist," LoBue said.
LoBue, 68, goes by the nickname 'Tony the Vet.'
He said he's taking these incredible steps because more and more vets aren't properly taken care of.
"Most of them discover they have to fight a new war and that's to be recognized as veterans and to receive the veteran benefits to which they are legally entitled," LoBue said.
He will carry with him a large American flag that he hopes will draw more attention to him and in turn his cause.
"I found when I walked with my hands in my pocket no one noticed me walking around," LoBue said.
He is asking people to help by going to his website, "Tony the Vet" for more information.
