A Colorado man faces a misdemeanor charge for allegedly planting a video camera in a public restroom at a Starbucks at the edge of San Diego State University in July, authorities said Thursday.

The City Attorney's Office this week sent a letter to James Burkhart, age unknown, notifying him that he must appear for an arraignment in downtown San Diego on Nov. 9, SDSU spokesman Greg Block said.

The camera was found near a trash can in the single-stall bathroom at a Starbucks coffee shop on the corner of College Avenue and Lindo Paseo on July 17. Investigators said they didn't know how long it had been there and if it had recorded footage of unsuspecting victims, Block said.

Block declined to say how campus police identified Burkhart as a suspect and said it was unclear why he was in San Diego. The suspect has no ties to the university and was not employed by the coffee shop, Block said.
