CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- An investigation was under way Monday into an industrial accident in which a 33-year-old man working at a Chula Vista shipyard suffered life-threatening injuries when a beam fell and sliced his neck, a police lieutenant said.
The man, who was reportedly in a medically induced coma at UCSD Medical Center, was injured at the Marine Group Boat Works near G Street and Marina Parkway about 6 p.m. Sunday, according to Chula Vista police Lt. Scott Arsenault.
He was wearing a hard hat at the time, Arsenault said. According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the man was part of a crew working to disassemble a 124-foot-long barge and he believed the part that dropped on him was still attached when it fell.
Paramedics took the gravely injured man to UCSD Medical Center, where he was later placed in a coma, the Union-Tribune reported.said.
