SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department will collect unwanted or expired prescription drugs Saturday as part of the fifth National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

This event encourages people to drop off unwanted, unused or expired drugs so they won't fall into the wrong hands. Deputies will accept drugs for disposal at the following locations on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.:

    CVS Pharmacy
    1385 Tavern Road, Alpine
  • Encinitas Sheriff's Station
    Scripps Encinitas Hospital
    354 Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas
  • Fallbrook Sheriff's Substation
    388 E. Alvarado St., Fallbrook
  • Imperial Beach Sheriff’s Station
    845 Imperial Beach Blvd., Imperial Beach
  • Julian Sheriff’s Substation
    2907 #C Washington St., Julian
  • Lemon Grove Sheriff’s Station
    3240 Main Street, Lemon Grove
  • Poway Sheriff's Station
    13100 Bowron Road, Poway
  • Ramona Substation
    Albertson’s Parking Lot 1459 Main St., Ramona
  • Santee Sheriff’s Station
    Walgreen's 10512 Mission Gorge Rd., Santee

According to the Medical Examiner's Office, the number of people who died as a result of prescription drug abuse has increased over the past five years, from 211 in 2007 to 267 in 2011.

For a full list of drop-off locations go to the Sheriff's website. Unneeded prescription drugs can also be dropped off at any Sheriff’s Station or Substation Monday to Friday during business hours.
