SAN DIEGO -- Military officials released the name Monday of a serviceman who was killed last week at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
USMC Sgt. Alexis Fontalvo of Houston, Texas, died Thursday afternoon, according to the base's public affairs office. Officials have withheld details about the fatality, including the nature of the accident.
Fontalvo, who enlisted in June 2004, was a CH-53E airframe mechanic with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
His personal decorations include an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, two Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, three Iraqi Campaign Medals and three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.
The cause of Fontalvo's death remains under investigation, according to a statement from MCAS Miramar.
