A fire of unknown origin engulfed a detached garage in an East County neighborhood Thursday, heavily damaging the structure and a 1960s- model Volkswagen Beetle parked inside it.

The non-injury blaze in the 4600 block of Pomona Avenue in La Mesa erupted shortly after noon, said Sonny Saghera, a spokesman for Heartland Fire & Rescue.

It took crews about 10 minutes to extinguish the flames, which also damaged a small storage structure behind the carport along with a neighbor's fence and vegetation, according to Saghera.

Investigators determined that the blaze had originated in the shed next to the garage, though the exact cause remained unclear in the late afternoon.

Total estimated damages were set at $75,000.
