A 52-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of robbing a North County jewelry store last fall, after sneaking inside during off-hours through holes he'd furtively cut in the building.

John Leslie Davis of Oceanside was taken into custody during a traffic stop near his home about 8:15 a.m., according to police.

On the morning of Oct. 21, employees of Mulloys Fine Jewelry on State Street in Carlsbad were preparing to open the shop for the day when a man in a blue hooded windbreaker and a Halloween mask burst in from a back room and demanded merchandise.

The gunman stole an undetermined amount of jewelry, fled into a women's restroom in the business and disappeared.

Investigating officers found holes cut in the lavatory ceiling and the roof of the building and concluded that the robber had gotten into and out of the store through them, Lt. Matt Magro said.

The thief evidently had chopped both apertures in the structure at some earlier time in preparation for the crime, according to Magro.
