SAN DIEGO - The same flag that honored the 9/11 victims at Ground Zero will play a part in services honoring SDPD Officer Jeremy Henwood, who was shot to death while serving his city.
The flag travels the country honoring fallen heroes who died in the line of duty. It was been to Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and numerous funerals across the country.
On Friday, the flag with be set up next to Officer Henwood’s casket during his funeral.
”We take care of our own in a very honorable and respectful sort of way,” said Lt. Andra Brown with the San Diego Police Department.
Several dozen officers were on hand at Lindbergh Field Thursday as the Honor Flag was flown in on an American Airlines flight from Dallas, Texas. The plane was sprayed with water by fire trucks as it taxied. San Diego Police Officers, San Diego Sheriff’s Officers and a San Diego Harbor Police bag piper escorted the flag through Terminal 2 of the airport. Onlookers stopped and watched, some snapping pictures.
Officer Henwood was shot in the head Saturday in what police call an unprovoked attack while sitting at a stop sign in his patrol car in City Heights. Henwood, a Marine reservist, returned in May from a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan.
San Diego law enforcement will commemorate the life and service of Officer Henwood with a procession that will start at Qualcomm Stadium at 8:15 a.m. and go westbound on Friars Road, continuing west on Sea World Drive, southbound on Nimitz Boulevard, north on Rosecrans Street, eastbound on Womble Street, and south on Truxton Street.
Drivers should avoid the area and take alternate routes, if possible.
Henwood’s memorial service is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. at The Rock Church in Liberty Station. Friday’s service is open to the public.
