Federal agents seized a 47-pound haul of cocaine from a would-be smuggler at Otay Mesa Port of Entry, authorities reported Tuesday.

The drug trafficker, a 51-year-old Mexican citizen who lives in Compton, drove into the inspection station in the southeastern reaches of San Diego shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

While officers processed his vehicle, a narcotics-sniffing dog alerted them to contraband inside it. A follow-up search turned up 18 packages of cocaine hidden in the trunk and center console, officials said.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel for booking on drug-smuggling charges.

The street value of the confiscated cocaine was estimated at $470,000.
