SAN DIEGO -- A suspect being pursued by police Wednesday threw a firearm out his car window before crashing the vehicle and suffering a head injury, San Diego police said.

Officers saw the driver go through a stop sign shortly after 10:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of Euclid Avenue in City Heights. When they tried to pull him over, the driver sped away, Lt. Andra Brown said.

The officers saw him toss a black bag out the car window during the chase. About three minutes after the pursuit began, the suspect crashed in the 5300 block of Auburn Drive, Brown said. When police retrieved the bag thrown from the car, they found a sawed-off shotgun in it.

The unidentified suspect jumped a fence but was apprehended about five minutes later, and paramedics treated him for a head injury.
