A California Highway Patrol officer traded shots with a suspected drunken driver's passenger Sunday, but no one was hurt and the driver and passenger got away, police said.

Two CHP officers tried to stop two men in a car around 3:30 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 8 in El Cajon, but the driver got off the freeway at Mollison Avenue and turned onto Madison Avenue, said El Cajon police Lt. Tim Henton.

The driver and passenger ran from the vehicle, and the officers chased the driver, Henton said.

At some point the passenger got back in the car and shot at the officers, he said.

The suspect tried to run over the officers, who returned fire as they avoided the vehicle.

Neither officer was hurt, he said.

The bullet-riddled car the suspects had been in was later found abandoned in lanes on southbound Highway 125 between Lemon Avenue and Spring Street. The vehicle had two blown tires and had traveled on its rims for ``a substantial distance,'' Henton said.

Sheriff's deputies were unable to track down the suspects, said Lt. Gary Steadman of the Sheriff's Department.
