IRVING, TEXAS—During the last election, we often heard the saying about "putting lipstick on a pig." Yesterday, the pig was the game the Cowboys won over the 0-5 Chiefs, and guess who is holding the lipstick.
"As a team when you win a close game, guys come through" said Cowboys Head Coach Wade Phillips. "When it looks like everything is going bad and you turn it around. When the defense that hadn't given up anything, gives up a touchdown, and now you gotta go to overtime, and they win the coin flip, where the percentages favor the team that wins the flip, and then they get the ball on the 50, in overtime, and your defense comes through and offense scores a touchdown, those are things that you start trusting each other and believing in each other" Phillips said.
"It was a nerve wracking game to watch" said Williams who predicted his return for the game against Atlanta on October 26th. "I see what people see on TV when I'm out there, I understand where people come from. I was a couch quarterback and cussing some players out" Williams said.
But he got over it by this morning because it's a new week, the start of the bye week where the Cowboys will work until Thursday and get a three day weekend.
Cowboys Linebacker Keith Brooking is looking forward to having some free time this weekend but cautions that his teammates need to have the big picture in their heads, wherever they choose to travel. "You remove yourselves from the game a bit, it's a good thing to do that , but you can't remove yourself too far. You have to make sure you can remove yourself from the game but think about what you can do to make this team better" Brooking said.
Another good by product of the bye week will be getting some of the injured players back but when Roy Williams and Felix Jones return, they may not have as much playing time as they're used to. Their replacements during their absence, Miles Austin and Tashard Choice, have earned more time on the field.
"Austin played 58 plays in the game" said Phillips. "I'm saying he's going to play 50 something plays in next game too. We're going to get him on the field. The guy has a game like that, and shows he can do the things we thought he can do, now he didn't catch every ball which is pretty amazing for having 250 yards, but his run after the catch is so strong, to get him the ball and he can make a big play, which he did, he showed he can do that. We gotta get him in the game, he's got to get his touches in the game. Bottom line, we'll give him the chance to do it again" Phillips said. He also plans the same treatment for Tashard Choice. "We gotta give him some touches, we can't elimiate him"
That is as long as Tashard returns from his bye week excursion. "I think I'm going to go to Vegas this week" said Choice, laughing afterwards. "I'm feeling a little lucky."
