The Seattle Department of Transportation warns that traffic in the Sodo district will be “particularly ugly” Saturday as UW graduation ceremonies will be winding up at CenturyLink Field just as a Mariners/Dodgers baseball game starts next door at Safeco Field.
CenturyLink will be opening its gates at 12 p.m. for UW graduation ceremonies, which are expected to wrap up at about 4:30 p.m. The Mariners game at Safeco Field starts at 4:15 p.m.
Parking has been reserved for the use of Mariners baseball fans only at four nearby garages; advice from the Mariners’ headquarters is that Saturday’s game attendees pre-purchase their parking.
The Seattle DOT encourages motorists headed to any weekend events in the city to help reduce traffic congestion by taking one of the many alternate modes of transportation available - Metro buses, the West Seattle Water Taxi, the Sounder commuter train, Link light rail, car pool, bicycle or walk, if feasible.
Meanwhile, drivers planning to cross the border into Canada on Sunday will want to plan ahead for a midday closure of northbound Interstate 5 at the Peace Arch border crossing in Blaine.
All lanes of northbound I-5 will be closed between State Route 543 (exit 275) and the border from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for the “Hands Across the Border” event. Drivers will be detoured off I-5 at exit 275 and will be directed to the Pacific Highway border crossing in Blaine.
(More information about the event is available on their website www.peacearchpark.org/peacearchcelebration.htm.)
