A 21-year-old soldier from Longwiew who was deployed in Afghanistan was killed Wednesday - just days before the end of her tour of duty, the Department of Defense announced.
Spc. Mikayla A. Bragg was assigned to the 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Knox, Ky.
She was scheduled to leave Afghanistan this week. But, she was shot and killed while on duty in the Khowst province of Afghanistan, according to the DOD.A dedicated soldier, Bragg was proud to be in the military, her grandmother said.
She joined the Army after graduating from Mark Morris High School in Longview in 2008. Her decision to join the military was a big surprise to her family. But, according to her grandmother, it was "true to form." She worked hard making it through boot camp and was recently promoted to specialist.
Bragg's parents are in Delaware, waiting to identify her remains.
Her family said she will be buried in Longview.
