U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar called for a portion of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation to be converted into a National Park. Salazar toured Hanford’s B Reactor Sunday, according to a story in the Tri-City Herald.

“We have not yet done a good enough job of telling the story ofWorld War II and the nuclear era born out of the war,” Salazar said.

Salazar was accompanied by Washington politicians Rep. Doc Hastings (R), Gov. Chris Gregoire (D), and Sen. Maria Cantwell (D). He said creating a National Park with Hanford at the centerpiece would have a positive economic impact.

Salazar spent the weekend in Washington. Saturday he attended a kick-off celebration for the removal of the Elwha River dams. Sunday he visited the Yakima River Basin and met with officials to discuss future water management needs.
