Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke remained comatose and in critical condition after undergoing surgery Wednesday afternoon, following a crash during training in Park City, Utah, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Details of Wednesday's operation, at Salt Lake City's University Hospital, were not immediately reported and Burke's prognosis remains unknown.
Earlier Wednesday, Burke was in an induced coma with a breathing tube in her throat, Utah neurointensivist Safdar Ansari said in a statement.
Robert Foxford, the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association's team doctor, said the treatment was standard when dealing with a serious brain injury.
The four-time X Games champion's publicist released a statement Wednesday from Burke's husband,Rory Bushfield, and her family
Her family are by her bedside and "wish to express their sincere thanks to everyone, all over the world, for their heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and well wishes," the statement said, according to The Toronto Star. "Sarah is a very strong young woman and she will most certainly fight to recover."
