KENT—Kent Police shot and killed a man they say was threatening them during a standoff on top of a water tower Wednesday. The 42-year old man was a suspect in a domestic violence assault.
Police say the man threatened to kill himself or hurt police then pretended to surrender and looked like he was going for a gun. Police opened fire.
The standoff took place in the 23800 block of 98th Ave. S.
Kent officers had spent much of the morning searching for the man, suspected of causing serious facial injuries to a woman during an early morning fight.
A nearby daycare was locked down as Kent Police Crisis Negotiators tried to talk the man down from the tower. He made repeated statements that he wanted to die and threatened to jump from the tower. He also told the negotiators that he was armed and would shoot anyone that tried to approach or stop him. Negotiators also learned that he had made suicidal threats to his assault victim a day earlier.
The involved police officers have been placed on administrative leave. The Renton Police Department is conducting the investigation into the shooting.
