MOSES LAKE—Hydroelectric power proved to be the key component that landed a BMW plant in Moses Lake. The companies planning to build the factory announced Tuesday morning that Grant County would be the best place for it.
SGL Group and BMW AG are the forces behind the plan, called "Project Chinook." They chose Moses Lake because of the availability of hydroelectric power to make parts for lightweight BMW cars.
The $100 million initial investment will create 80 jobs in Moses Lake.
Governor Chris Gregoire worked to land the factory. She was there when the groups made the announcement at a news conference at the Four Seasons hotel in Seattle Tuesday.
BMW plans to use hydro-power to make carbon fibers for parts on a new energy-efficient car called the Megacity electric vehicle. The car is set to come out before 2015.
