Size 14 red shoes aren’t just for clowns anymore.
In the coming weeks, volunteers will be out raising money to support a program helping those who are dealing with having a sick child in the hospital.
This is the first year the Imperial Valley is fundraising for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego, but local representatives have taken it to heart, making it more than just Red Shoe Day, but rather Red Shoe Month, said Charles Day, president and chief executive officer for the San Diego-based group. And many people from the Valley have utilized the services.
Ronald McDonald House of San Diego is a home away from home for families with seriously ill children being treated at San Diego-area hospitals, like Rady Children’s Hospital, he said. Of the 14,000 families who have lodged at the facility, about a quarter of them are from the Imperial Valley.
Beyond housing, the house provides additional services, including 47-rooms, laundry facility, chapel and more.
With all the services provided by the San Diego group, it’s time for the Imperial Valley to be aware of how many families have been helped, said Imperial Valley coordinator Jan Hester.
She was helped by the Ronald McDonald House when her grandchild was born at only 32 weeks and airlifted to Children’s in San Diego. She said having a place to stay that is within feet of the hospital was invaluable.
“That became my passion then, to give back,” she said.
She hopes that others in the Valley will be willing to give back in the coming weeks. Different fundraisers are being held, including donations being accepted at some local schools, businesses and even on street corners on Sept. 28, the actual Red Shoe Day.
