With the 2012 edition of the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta just around the corner, it’s time to think about entering an exhibit and competing for some of the $13,000 in cash prizes that are handed out each year to fair exhibitors.
The 10-day fair is March 2-11.
Meanwhile, $56 Family Value Packs — a package that consists of two adult and two children’s fair tickets, as well as food coupons and two carnival WOW wristband coupons — are on sale at the Imperial Valley Mall and fair box office. The value of the package is more than $100. Individual advance tickets and carnival wristbands go on sale locally on Feb 1.
“If you can make it, bake it, sew it, grow it or show it, there is some kind of category available to local hobbyists and crafters,” fair Chief Executive Officer Theresa Garcia said.
The fair has embarked on a proactive effort to boost adult entries this year by holding the first-ever “Fair Entries 101” class 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Imperial Valley Expo boardroom on the fairgrounds at 200 E. Second St., Imperial. The boardroom is just north of the main fair office.
Although the adult entry form deadline is also Saturday, exhibit superintendents will be on hand to help people fill out the paperwork and answer questions.
The entries are not needed until closer to fair time. The juniors’ entry deadline is Jan. 27.
There are many ways for people to participate in the fair. All of the categories are included in the Exhibitor Handbook posted on the fair Web site at www.ivexpo.com All of the categories are listed in the handbook as well as the potential cash prizes, or premiums, which total $13,000.
“If you are not sure what department, division or class your item should be entered into, please come to our workshop,” Garcia said. “There is something uniquely suited to you: from flowers to quilts to sauces and marinades to photos and collections.”
Another prize is being offered before the fair opens. Anyone who purchases a Family Value Pack prior to Feb. 3 is eligible to enter the Valentine’s Day “Sweetheart of a Deal” contest with a grand prize worth more than $750: earrings and a necklace from Greens Jewelry, El Centro, and dinner for two at Imperial’s Maranatha Restaurant.
This year’s 10-day fair theme is “Tropical Nights and Carnival Lights.”
