Dogwood overpass closing for five days
A large construction sign notifies drivers that the Dogwood Road overpass above Interstate 8 will be closed this week as the bridge is widened to accommodate the increase in traffic near the Imperial Valley Mall in El Centro. (Eric Miller)
Starting 7 a.m. Monday and running through 5 p.m. Friday, residents are asked to avoid the area and use alternative routes, said city Senior Engineer John Gay. It will be the final push of a more than nine-month project.
Work began last year on the overpass and had to be extended because of design changes and other issues.
Four major operations will take place this week, including grinding down the road and repaving it, setting up guardrails, adding traffic signals and maintenance for the state Department of Transportation, he said.
The road will be shut down for the extended period to avoid having to have multiple closures, he said.
“We’re giving the contractors the overpass so they can get this work done as quickly as possible,” he said.
