Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office investigate vehicle fire
SMITHSBURG — The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating an early-morning vehicle fire Thursday that caused $15,000 worth of damage to a stolen 2003 Mercedes sport utility vehicle, according to a news release from the fire marshal’s office.
The vehicle, owned by Ricki La Kishsa Barnes, was reported stolen out of Prince George’s County, Deputy State Fire Marshal Ed Ernst said.
Authorities got the call for the fire at 5:47 a.m. after it was discovered by a passer-by along Jefferson Boulevard east of Hagerstown, Ernst said.
It took about 10 minutes for six Smithsburg firefighters to control the blaze, which is believed to have been started by an incendiary device in the cargo area of the vehicle, authorities said.
Anyone with information about the incident may call the arson hot line at 1-800-492-7529 or the state fire marshal’s office in Hagerstown at 301-766-3888.
