A former deputy at the Washington County Detention Center was sentenced Monday in Washington County Circuit Court to 15 months in jail for bringing the drug Suboxone into the facility.
Leslie Allen Martin Jr., 31, formerly of 10136 St. George Circle in Hagerstown, was sentenced by Washington County Circuit Judge M. Kenneth Long Jr. to five years in prison with all but 15 months suspended, court records show.
Martin, inmates Ronald Eugene Wilson II and Robert Daniel Hilliard, and a woman, Brittany Danielle Hose, were charged in November with conspiring to bring Suboxone, a drug used to treat opiate withdrawal, into the detention center.
Martin had been free on bond until he entered a guilty plea to distribution of Suboxone in March, his attorney, John Salvatore, said after the sentencing hearing. Martin’s bond was revoked at that time and he has since been held in the Frederick County (Md.) Detention Center, Salvatore said.
Other charges, including possession with intent to distribute Suboxone, delivery of a controlled dangerous substance to a place of confinement and criminal conspiracy, were dismissed when Martin entered his plea, court records show.
Martin has been held in protective custody at the detention center, Salvatore said.
Long ordered that Martin serve the sentence in a local detention facility rather than a state prison, Salvatore said. That is an option when the sentence is between 12 and 18 months, he said.
Investigators with the sheriff’s office had been monitoring telephone conversations between Wilson and Hose in early November that led them to believe an officer was involved in the conspiracy, charging documents show. Investigators also had surveillance video showing Martin going from his work station to Wilson’s cell, documents show.
Wilson was sentenced last week to eight years in prison for his role in the scheme and Hilliard was sentenced to three years in prison for his involvement, according to court records.
Hose pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute Suboxone in April, but has not been sentenced, court records show.
