Cruiser Accident

Hartford Police Cruiser involved In Accident (Christine Dempsey Hartford Courant / January 21, 2010)

A police cruiser and a car collided at Broad Street and Asylum Avenue early this morning. All injuries were minor, police said.

The crash occurred at about 5:45 a.m., when the police car, carrying two officers, was on its way to an emergency call. The cruiser was headed north on Broad Street when it collided with a Honda Accord carrying a woman and her two daughters, a baby and a 3-year-old, Sgt. Gabriel Laureano said. The woman had been driving east on Asylum.

All five people were transported to Hartford Hospital, said Sgt. Christene Mertes. The police department's evidentiary services division gathered evidence at the scene.

The front of the Honda was crushed; the police car's damage consisted of a large dent on the driver's side back door.

Laureano said the cruiser's lights and siren were activated at the time of the crash. It is too early to tell who is at fault, he said.

The intersection was closed during the investigation, slowing the morning commute.
