The weekly rewind on GML. Are shootings impossible to eliminate? Everyday we hear about guns blazing, but why does it have to be in the same neighborhoods everyday? 20-month-old Cynia Cole was shot and killed in an alleged mistaken identity situation. A 21-year old is in custody, surrendering to police by means of his mother and Rev. James Meeks from Salem Baptist Church. Red Eye reporter Tracy Swartz keeps track of the homicides in Chicago. The 100th homicide of 2010 was recorded last week in city. It was about the same time last year when the city's homicide tally moved into triple digits. In the last week, Chicago police recorded 17 homicides. Sixteen of the victims died from gunshot wounds. One victim, a 78-year-old woman, died from asphyxia after a plastic bag was placed over her head in her Edgewater home. Meanwhile, North Lawndale recorded three homicides in the last week, including a double homicide on Sunday in which two men, ages 21 and 25, were shot to death, according to a records review. Chatham and Greater Grand Crossing each saw two homicides in the last week. Gunshot deaths also were recorded in Auburn Gresham, Avalon Park, East Garfield Park, the Lower West Side, Morgan Park, New City, Roseland, Washington Park and West Englewood. Citywide, there have been 34 homicides this month and 106 this year. (Statistics compliments of Tracy Swartz at RedEye).
Also, school funding is still in question. Thousands of protesters walked with picket signs here and in Springfield. No money to reduce class sizes and no money for teachers. Legislators are saying no to the iTunes tax, but couldn't this money be used to fill funding gaps? Republicans say that we should be more responsible by using the existing funds more wisely. Illinois has a $9 billion gap.
What do you think about the former governor Rod Blagojevich? His lawyers are getting the subpoenas to Sen. Dick Durbin and President Barack Obama. Will these gentlemen have to come to court? Is the grandstanding of Rod Blagojevich becoming a cartoon.
Can gangs be eliminated or just managed? 100 homicides already? School funding? Should Sen Durbin and president Obama have to testify at Blagojevich trial? You decide.
