Cody Timothy Swanson, 18, was driving west on Lewis Street in Whitehall when his vehicle left the road, hit a chain-link fence, and came to rest next to a building on the Alcoa Howmet complex. Swanson was transported first to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon and then to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in downtown Grand Rapids. He was listed in critical condition until he died Monday morning.
Police said so far no witnesses to the crash have been identified. They are conducting an investigation into the circumstances that led to the crash and said it appears that excessive speed was a factor. At this point it has not been determined if alcohol was a contributing factor.
