Hundreds showed up throughout the day on Saturday to sign up for Grand Valley Health Plan’s 2012 free weight loss challenge called “Bringin’ Healthy Back” at their Beckwith facility
GVHP decided to provide the free resources to thank the public for 30 years of service.
“They will do an official weigh in and they will do an official weigh out the month of December. If they lose the total of 12 pounds, which is the total of 1 pound per month, then they will be registered for over $11,000 in prizes which is just fantastic.” Communications Director for Grand Valley Health Plan Kristen Sichon said.
While Saturday marked the official first weigh-in for the public, Thursday, mayors from Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Walker, Hudsonville and Grandville signed up.
“I’ve done the crash diet before you can lose the 10 pounds and sort of forget about it and gain 20 back but this is literally a challenge to change the way we live, the way we eat, the amounts we eat the exercise we get.” Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell said. ““I think it’s going to be a fun opportunity for we mayors and for our citizens” he added.
“Bringin’ Healthy Back” is open to anyone who is 13 years and older who is 12 pounds above a healthy weight. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 need to be with a parent or guardian, Sichon said.
If people are having a hard time getting motivated, perhaps prizes will help.
Those prizes range from family vacations, fitness club memberships, televisions and much more, organizers said.
