GRAND RAPIDS—One year ago, Eric Walton was shot and killed during a robbery in Grand Rapids, and so far, no arrests.
The victim, 38-year old Eric Walton, seemed to have his life moving in the right direction at the time of the shooting. Tuesday night, his family held a vigil to honor him.
Eric Walton, known by many as 'Slop,' had been in trouble in his younger years, but his family says he straightened out, he was living a clean life.
June 23, 2008, at four in the morning, someone broke into his aunt's house at 434 Delaware SE and woke Walton. The motive was robbery. Eric, who was already weak from dialysis for kidney failure, was shot twice in the torso. He died at the scene. Eric's uncle, Robert Walton, told FOX 17 News, "Nobody deserves to die like that; we're just trying to get some closure, that's all we're trying to do."
The family gathered for a vigil marking the somber anniversary Tuesday afternoon. Police had some leads early in the case, but never arrested anyone for the crime. The family believes the killer wasn't alone at the time of the shooting, and may have bragged about the murder. Eric's sister, Taleah Walton says, "I want the person who did this to him to come forward and turn himself in because it's been too long; it's been a year and he is truly missed." Grand Rapids Police continue to investigate the case; if you have any information, call them or Silent Observer.
