An organization aimed at reducing poverty has announced a $25,000 matching grant, made possible by a local American-indian tribe.
The Kalamazoo Poverty Reduction Initiative (PRI) announced the Gun Lake Tribe has said they will match contributions to the organization, dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000. Contributions must be made by March, 31, 2012 in order to be matched.
PRI says that to date, over 4,000 residents have participated in their "month of poverty" simulation program, which exposes residents to challenges faced by those facing real poverty.
According to the 2010 census, almost 50,000 Kalamazoo County residents live below the poverty line.
